Seven-shot

The Siebenschuss (also Hasenstein ) is the popular name for the Siebenschussstein in the Kottenforst in the Rhineland Nature Park in Buschhoven , a district of the municipality of Swisttal in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . This is a stone monument that shows a rabbit . The story of this early hare monument goes back to the autumn of 1888 when a driven hunt was held there. Later the name was transferred to a parcel and was included in official cadastral maps. The stone with its history also indicates the historical and current importance of the Kottenforst as a hunting ground.

background

There is the following legend about the background to the installation of the seven-shot stone: “The drivers made a lot of noise to drive the rabbits and other animals out of their hiding place. It is reported that suddenly seven hunters stood facing each other with rifles raised and a single hare. Each of the hunters tried to hit the hare. When the first shot missed, the cunning hare jumped at the hunters, darted between their legs and hooked hook after hook until the seventh shot also missed its target. So he escaped into the thick undergrowth and disappeared under the mocking laughter of the beaters. “The sympathy also goes to the mildness of the hunters who had not pursued the nimble animal any further.

History of the monument

Originally the Siebenschussstein was a boundary stone . On this stone a stranger painted a fat hare that makes males, and with it created the first hare monument. It was soon popularly known as the “Siebenschuss”.

In 1973 the stone was lost without a trace during excavation work. Since research initially remained inconclusive, the Buschhoven CDU then had a new stone made. This was carved by the local sculptor Herbert Höhmann based on a drawing by the Buschhoven teacher Adelheid Willers and inaugurated in May 1979. The new “seven-shot stone” is firmly anchored in the ground. In 1985 the old stone reappeared. This can be seen again today, walled into the wall of the stable building of the Buschhoven forester's house. In addition to the name of the corridor, the street Siebenschuss in Buschhoven has been a reminder of history for several years.
