Origin and development

The Dornbusch West settlement was built between 1952 and 1959 with funds from social housing by the non-profit housing and settlement construction company (Gewobag). Hans Martin Kampffmeyer , who at the time was commercial director of Gewobag and later head of the Frankfurt planning department, was also involved in its conception .

800 apartments were built, of which 640 are apartment buildings and 160 are single-family houses. The urban layout followed the model of a loosened city in a row construction. The three- to four-story, slightly offset residential buildings are mostly at right angles to the street. The two-storey single-family row houses can also be reached via residential paths. In the north of the estate, a nine-storey residential high-rise adds an urban accent.

The settlement is accessible from Eschersheimer Landstrasse via Fritz-Tarnow-Strasse and Carl-Goerdeler-Strasse. From Marbachweg you can reach the area via Mierendorffstraße. Adolf-Reichwein-Strasse and Max-Bock-Strasse are subordinate residential streets. With the underground stations Fritz-Tarnow-Straße and Dornbusch, there are public transport stops nearby.

Infrastructure

The Dornbusch West settlement is characterized by numerous infrastructure facilities. This makes it stand out from other purely residential developments that were designed at the same time. In the course of the construction of the settlement, a community center, several schools, day-care centers, shops and a green area were created. A little later a church was built. The infrastructure as well as other facilities and shops in the area form the center of the Dornbusch district.

Single-storey shop pavilions shape the image of the settlement along Eschersheimer Landstrasse. They contribute to the urban character of the settlement. The originally built community center was replaced in the 1990s by the new Dornbusch building with a library, registration office, additional shops and restaurants.

There are five schools in the settlement: To the east are the Wöhlerschule grammar school and the Heinrich Seliger school primary school . In the north are the Anne Frank School and the two special needs schools Viktor Frankl School and Hermann Herzog School. The day care center 38 is adjacent. A green area with a playground has been created in the middle of the settlement. In the north are sports fields. The Protestant Dornbusch Church was inaugurated in 1962 and reduced in size through renovations in 2004. The western part of the settlement is listed.
