location

Victory Square is an important traffic junction in Shevchenko Raion in the west of Kiev City on ten streets, including Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Victory Prospectus .

history

The square, laid out in the middle of the 19th century, is named after the victory in the Great Patriotic War .

From 1867 it was called Halyzkaplatz (Galizischer Platz), in 1905 it was named Powstannja-Platz (insurrection square) and since 1952 it has had its current name.

Development

The square is dominated by buildings in the style of Soviet architecture. Worth mentioning is the building of the National Circus of Ukraine ( Національний цирк Украuteни ) built in 1960 in neo- classical style, designed for 2000 spectators , the largest dome building in the city at the time, the 17-storey hotel "Lybid" and the department store "Ukraine".

Obelisk in honor of the city of Kiev

The 43-meter-high "Obelisk in honor of the city of Kiev" is a reinforced concrete obelisk clad in white marble with a gold-plated Soviet star on its top. It got its name because of the title "City of Heroes" awarded to the city in 1965, which it acquired in the Great Patriotic War. It was placed in the center of the square in 1985 on the 40th anniversary of Victory.
