Siegfried Melzig (born July 12, 1940 in Breslau ) is a former German soccer coach who was previously also active as a soccer player.
Today he lives in retirement in Boppard (Rhineland-Palatinate).

Career start

His first coaching station in professional football was VfL Osnabrück in the 1976/77 season of the 2nd Bundesliga , which he coached until April 1977. In May 1977 the Bonner SC (also 2. Bundesliga North) was a short stopover before Melzig took over Bayer 05 Uerdingen , which was also involved in the then double-track 2. Bundesliga in August of the same year . He stayed there for a little over a year until October 1978.

Chapter Greece

In the summer of 1979 an offer drove him south, where he took over the reigning Greek cup winner Panionios Athens . In the 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup , he trained his team to qualify against Twente Enschede after a 4-0 home win, but drew the shorter one in the second round against the then strong IFK Göteborg . Since you also had to fight for relegation in the local championship and the cup defense failed in round 1, the chapter on Greece closed before the winter break.

Homecoming

After his return he took over the coaching of FC Homburg (2nd BL South) for the 1980/81 season, which he had to leave prematurely in March 1981. A year later (March 1982) he jumped at the Freiburg FC , participant in the now single-track 2nd division for the dismissed Hans Linsenmaier . The start of the 1982/83 season still found him in secondary professional football at MSV Duisburg ; in April 1983 he had to leave. In February 1984 he was committed to the end of the season by the second division Rot-Weiss Essen in place of Burkhard Schacht . From July 1985 to mid-April 1986 he coached FC Grenchen .

Later he trained among other things the SpVgg Bayreuth (1989/90) and Preußen Münster (1991).

Young years as a player

As a player, he was active for 10 games as a goalkeeper at SV Weisenau in the Regionalliga Südwest in 1963/64 . He also played as a goalkeeper at SV Meppen for several years .
