Siegfried Weiss (General)

Siegfried Weiß (born February 14, 1914 in Pirna ; † June 26, 1986 there ) was a lieutenant general of the NVA and deputy minister for national defense of the GDR .

Life

The son of a carpenter attended elementary school and was a member of the Jungspartakusbund from 1926 to 1928. From 1928 to 1932 he completed an apprenticeship as a moulder and was then unemployed. After completing his labor service in 1934, he found work as a moulder in a steel foundry. From 1936 to 1938 he served as a gunner in the Wehrmacht and again worked as a moulder in 1938/39. When the war broke out, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht again and did military service until 1945, most recently as sergeant in the artillery. From 1945 to 1949 he was a Soviet prisoner of war, where he attended an antifa school.

After the war he returned to his hometown Pirna and became a member of the SED . He was immediately appointed as a party functionary, was the head of the operating school of the VEB Zellstoffwerk Pirna and as secretary of the SED district leadership in Pirna. In November 1949 he joined the German People's Police and was deputy head of the main inspection department until 1951. After a short time as director of the VP school in Pinnow, he stayed in the Soviet Union for a special course in 1951/52. From 1952 to 1955 he was head of the Eggesin KVP office . On November 1, 1954, he was appointed major general of the KVP . From 1955 to 1957 he attended the General Staff Academy of the USSR and was then head of the Administration Inspection of the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV) until 1959 and head of the administration training of the MfNV from 1959 to 1967. In 1967 he was promoted to lieutenant general. From March 15, 1967 to 1972, he was then Deputy Minister for National Defense for Training and from 1972 until his retirement on April 30, 1974, Chief Inspector of the NVA.

He last lived in Pirna and was the chairman of the commission for the care of old deserving party members of the SED district leadership in Pirna. He was buried in the cemetery in Pirna.
