Live and act

She studied education and Romance studies in Hamburg, Tübingen and Montpellier . After the second teaching examination, Ellger-Rüttgardt taught at elementary, secondary and special schools and completed additional special education training. From 1975 to 1983 she was a research assistant for special education in the educational sciences department at the University of Hamburg. There she did her PhD. phil. The subject of her dissertation was: The auxiliary school teacher. Social history of a group of teachers . The doctoral candidate pursued a twofold objective with her academic work:

By trying to capture the pedagogical 'self-role' of the teachers who have been active in the auxiliary school, we would like to make a narrowly limited contribution to a theory of the school for the disabled. In addition, the study is able to supplement the findings so far available on the history of the teaching profession .

From 1983 to 1986 she was a temporary professor at the University of Hamburg, then from 1987 to 1994 she was professor for pedagogy for the learning disabled at the University of Hanover. In 1995 Ellger-Rüttgardt received a call for general rehabilitation education at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 2000 to 2002 she was dean of the Philosophical Faculty IV, from 2005 to 2006 director of the Institute for Rehabilitation Sciences and from WS 2004/05 to summer semester 2009 professor for general pedagogy for rehabilitation and learning disabled.
