Sigismund Heinrich Alioth (born October 14, 1907 in Basel ; † November 7, 1973 in Arlesheim ) was a Swiss engineer and politician.

Life

Sigismund Heinrich Alioth was the son of Johann Sigismund Alioth (1881-1928), grandson of Johann Siegmund Alioth , the founder of the first Schappes spinning mill in Switzerland, and Marie Anna Merian (1885-1972).

In 1933 he graduated from the ETH Zurich with a degree in mechanical engineering . After studying in the United States , Alioth began working in 1934 as operations manager at the Grellingen spinning mill . In the industrial company Schappe in Basel he was technical director from 1943 and general director from 1956. Alioth has had a significant influence on their branches in Germany and France. He was one of the first to introduce synthetic yarns to the company.

Alioth was involved in various employers' associations. From 1941 he was a member of the board of the Association of Swiss Schappespinnereien. Restructuring within the industrial company Schappe and the merger initiated and promoted by Alioth with a large French Schappe company led to conflicts and finally to Alioth's departure in 1964. He then took over as head of Immobilienlgesellschaft De Bary & Co. Ltd. , the major development of the area between Gellert street and Lehenmattstrasse in Basel. He was also committed to the Greif book printing company in Basel.

In 1968 Alioth was elected to succeed Werner Jauslin (1924–2015) in the district administrator of the canton of Basel-Landschaft , to which he belonged until 1973. In his last year in office and life he was president of the FDP parliamentary group.

Alioth was married to Marguerite Anne De Bary (1911-2001). The marriage had four children. The couple's grave sculpture in the Bromhübel cemetery in Arlesheim was designed by Albert Schilling .
