Sigmund Theodor Stein (born April 2, 1840 in Burgkunstadt , † September 27, 1891 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German scientist and physician.

Life

Sigmund Theodor Stein was born as the eldest son of the rabbi and writer Leopold Stein . Having grown up in Frankfurt am Main since his second résumé, he studied chemistry and physics in Heidelberg and Munich as well as medicine in Erlangen, Würzburg, Prague and Berlin. In Munich he became a member of the Corps Bavaria in 1861 . After his doctorate as Dr. phil. in 1862 and Dr. med. in 1864 he established himself as a general practitioner in Frankfurt am Main. He took part in the German War as a royal Württemberg field hospital senior physician and in the Franco-German War as a royal Württemberg regimental senior physician. Like his father, he was the first Jew to be accepted into the Masonic lodge "for unity" of the eclectic covenant .

In 1880 he gave up his activity as a general practitioner in order to work exclusively scientifically and in neurological and electrotherapeutic consultative practice. In 1881 he founded the electrical engineering company in Frankfurt am Main. He was the editor of the Elektrotechnische Rundschau.

Stein is considered to be one of the pioneers in the use of photography in science. He developed an automatic device for displaying photographs without a darkroom, the Heliopiktor , a forerunner of the Polaroid camera, which he presented as Germany's delegate at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna. His technical developments included apparatus for photographing the pulse and sounds, as well as endoscopes for viewing the eye, ear, larynx and urethra. In 1878 he introduced a sphygmophone, a forerunner of the EKG. He did not live to see the International Electrotechnical Exhibition held in Frankfurt in 1891 at his instigation .
