Anselmo Gouthier

Anselmo Gouthier (born June 19, 1933 in Roreto Chisone , Piedmont ; † November 1, 2015 in Bolzano ) was an Italian lawyer and longtime politician of the Communist Party of Italy (KPI).

Political career

Gouthier completed a law degree at the University of Pavia in the years following the end of World War II . In 1963, 30-year-old Gouthier, who grew up in Merano , was elected provincial secretary of the South Tyrolean KPI. In 1964 he was elected to the regional council of Trentino-South Tyrol and thereby also to the South Tyrolean parliament . In the elections of 1968, 1973 and 1978 he was confirmed in his mandate. 1979 Gouthier resigned from his state parliament mandate in order to run successfully in the first elections to the European Parliament . As a member of the communist parliamentary group he was there a. a. Member of the Committee on Budgets and deputy chairman of the delegation for relations with Yugoslavia from 1983 until the end of the legislature in 1984 .

Career in the Italian Communist Party

In the 1970s Gouthier also held important functions within the Communist Party. In October 1976, a few months after the KPI had received around 34% of the votes in the Italian parliamentary elections and was about to participate in government, Gouthier was elected to the eight-member party secretariat around the then party chairman Enrico Berlinguer , who was then also the future Italian president Giorgio Napolitano belonged to. Gouthier also represented his party on numerous trips abroad during these years on both sides of the Iron Curtain . As early as 1973 he had taken part in a multi-week trip to Latin America , and attended a meeting with the then Chilean President Salvador Allende as a member of a three-member party delegation .
