Signal master (railway)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Signal master , (abbr .: Sm), also signal worker, is a functional designation in railway operations for a technical railway employee who is responsible for inspection, maintenance, fault clearance and fault clearance within a maintenance area (a signal maintenance office ; analogous to the telecommunication master in a telecommunication maintenance office) is responsible for the operationally safe state of the signaling technology (Fm: operating telecommunications systems) of railway systems ( safety technology ) in his district.

The office and any service accommodation of a signal master is called the signal master's office , that of the telecommunications master is called the telecommunication master's office . Organizationally, both areas belonged to the railway maintenance authorities until the end of the Second World War . After that, separate offices were set up, at the DR from the beginning as joint signal and telecommunications master offices (SFM). At DB, the separate areas of signal maintenance (Sm) and telecommunication maintenance (Fm) were merged to form communication maintenance (Nm). With the 1994 rail reform, these areas were separated again; at present, the control and safety technology (LST) and communication technology (KT) are responsible here.

Point mechanic

In the area of German Bahn AG , the signaling installations are of course by course mechanic serviced . It is your responsibility to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and remedy defects in the safety equipment of the turnouts. The safety equipment of points includes the point drive, point signals and point locks with the associated transmission parts. The work can also be carried out by external companies. However, the responsibility for this work remains with the railway infrastructure company . The switch mechanic can further qualify as a track mechanic. In many cases, the turnout mechanic training takes place before the signaling mechanic.

Signal mechanic

In the area of DB Netz AG, the signaling equipment of signal boxes and level crossing systems is maintained by signal mechanics . These facilities include the facilities for securing train and shunting movements, such as switching devices in the signal box and technically secured level crossings. In most cases, the signal mechanic is also a switch mechanic. As with the turnout mechanics, this work can also be carried out by external companies.

Requirement and exam

Switch mechanics and signal mechanics are specialists in control and safety technology (abbreviated: Fk LST) in the sense of the EBO . You must provide evidence of relevant professional training. After a professional training, the qualification must be proven in front of the specialist with the participation of the EBA (so-called key examination), i. H. the authorization to use the keys for red security locks as access for LST systems (relay rooms, block switchgear, signal and switch drives or switch boxes, level crossing switchgear etc.); analogous to this, brown locks at Fm / KT). Regionally there are other closings such as green and black locks, the rules are now comparable to those for the red ones.

Situation at the German railways before 1994

Until the rail reform in 1994, the job title at the Deutsche Bundesbahn was Werkführer. The title of foreman, head foreman, master foreman or works inspector could be acquired through promotion .

At the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the maintenance of safety technology and switch locks had been separate since the end of the Second World War. For the latter, turnout fitters who were employed by the railway maintenance depots and thus belonged to the main service branch of railway systems were responsible. The maintenance limit was at the connection bolt in the slide rod. For signal workers there was an apprenticeship as electrical signal fitter , later electrical signal mechanic . The job titles of the signal workers were

  • Signal operating helper (S-Btrh), the (few) unskilled or semi-skilled employees,
  • Signal operating fitters (S-Btrmt), trained partial skilled workers (signal and telecommunications fitters) after completing the 8th grade,
  • Signal mechanic operation (S-Btrm), skilled workers,
  • Signal operations chief mechanic (S-Btrom), additional qualification, entitled to work independently on systems secured with a green security lock (most outdoor systems and, for example, crossing security systems without dependencies on main signals) and
  • Signal operations chief mechanic (S-Btrhm), this qualification level corresponds to the signaling technician foreman, entitled to independent and responsible work on all security systems, including those with a red security lock. In addition to the keys, head and main mechanics of signal operations had sealing pliers for applying security and surveillance seals.
  • Area mechanic was the representative of the maintenance area manager . This designation stood for the classic master position comparable to industry.
