Signify NV (formerly Philips Lighting ) is a manufacturer of lighting technology . Signify operates your business under various brands including Philips, Interact, Modular, Color Kinetics, Strand, Vari-Lite and UHP. The company is based in Eindhoven and there are numerous national companies including Signify GmbH (for Germany), Signify Austria GmbH and Signify Switzerland AG.

history

Signify's former parent company Philips was founded in 1891 as "Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken" in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Initially, Philips primarily produced and marketed incandescent lamps. Despite the constant expansion of the company and the range of products on offer in the course of the 20th century, lighting remained a central aspect of the company. In the course of the major changes in the lighting industry at the beginning of this millennium, the company began selling the first commercial LED retrofit lamps in 2008. The digital development then led to the market launch of the first networked lighting systems of the then lighting division of Philips in 2012: Philips CityTouch for the management of street lighting and Philips Hue for intelligent lighting at home. In 2016 Philips Lighting became an independent company by separating from Royal Philips. Since then the company has been listed on the Amsterdam Euronext Stock Exchange. Technological innovations followed, for example in March 2018 when the Interact platform for networked lighting was introduced in the Internet of Things . In addition, Philips Lighting presented its LiFi technology (Light Fidelity) for the first time, a wireless data transmission and communication technology using light waves. In order to express these possibilities of light, which is becoming an “intelligent language”, Philips Lighting changed the company name on May 16, 2018 and has been operating under the name Signify ever since. The company continues to market and sell many products and offerings under the Philips brand.

Germany, Austria and Switzerland

The company's DACH market (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) is headquartered in Hamburg . In addition to this primary sales location, there is another German location, Aachen, which is responsible for system development and product management of the networked systems for public and street lighting. Signify's other DACH country organizations are based in Vienna for Austria and in Affoltern am Albis for Switzerland.

offer

Signify offers lighting products, systems and services. Overall, we can represent more than 125 years of experience in the lighting industry with innovations for the professional and consumer market.

The product range comprises three areas: lamps, lights and systems & services.

  • Lamps mainly include LED and conventional lamps (both in classic lamp shape and as candles, spots, tubes and LightStrips). There are also electronic ballasts, drivers and sensors.
  • The luminaire area includes its own luminaire housings including built-in LEDs, lamps, cables and other components. Signify offers luminaires in different shapes and for both consumer and professional needs.
  • The systems and services segment includes various lighting solutions. This includes software systems for monitoring, controlling and managing lighting as well as services such as lifecycle and managed services.

The portfolio includes several brands under which the products will continue to be offered: Philips, the global brand in professional and consumer lighting; Interact, as an IoT platform for connected lighting systems; Modular, the international architectural lighting brand; and Luceplan as an Italian high-end lighting brand.

Philips Hue

Despite the name change, Signify continues to offer its Hue consumer lighting system under the Philips brand name. Philips Hue, which was launched in October 2012, offers smart lighting for the home. It includes lamps, LightStrips, spotlights, lights and controls for both indoor and outdoor use in the home. The lamps and luminaires networked with one another via the wireless ZigBee specification enable the lighting in the house and garden to be individually controlled and adjusted as required. The system is compatible with smart home platforms and devices (such as Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa) and can thus be controlled via app, switches or voice. Other companies have also developed devices, applications, and systems that interact with the system. There are more than 750 third-party applications for Philips Hue thanks to a vibrant developer program. The program is open to lighting manufacturers so that they can build and market products that incorporate Philips Hue technology.

Interact

In March 2018, Signify introduced Interact, an IoT platform that functions as a platform for data-supported services. Interact is a scalable cloud-based platform that works with data management and data processing functions to bring all types of data together and to offer data-driven services that go beyond just lighting. The Interact platform offers business customers the possibility of networked lighting systems in connection with the IoT. Interact enables customers to use data-based services and make data-based decisions to optimize operations and save costs.

Depending on the area of application, Signify offers various solutions based on the Interact system:

  • Interact City for public lighting of streets, parks and squares
  • Interact Industry for smarter warehouses, factories and manufacturing facilities
  • Interact Landmark uses light to showcase landmarks and urban architecture
  • Interact Office to transform the office into an intelligent workplace
  • Interact Pro as a lighting solution especially for small and medium-sized companies
  • Interact Retail in retail
  • Interact Sports for the central control of all lighting aspects of sports facilities

Interact City for the administration and control of public lighting in cities and municipalities is already used in around 30 million light points around the world. The North Rhine-Westphalian city of Siegburg controls its networked street lighting centrally via the light management system. In the American metropolis of Los Angeles, special sensors are used in addition to lighting, which make it possible to record and react to environmental data.

Innovations

Signify holds the rights to 18,250 patents worldwide. Together with the focus on research and further development, the company takes on a pioneering role in the progress of the lighting industry.

Li-Fi

In 2018 Signify introduced Light Fidelity (Li-Fi), a technology for broadband connectivity via lighting. LiFi, based on the name of the German computer scientist Harald Haas, offers like other wireless technologies a wireless two-way high-speed communication. Instead of radio signals, light waves are used for data transmission. For this purpose, every LiFi-capable luminaire has an integrated modem, which modulates the light at a speed that is imperceptible to the human eye. The light is recognized by a LiFi USB dongle that is plugged into the USB port of the notebook or tablet. The dongle sends the data back to the luminaire via an infrared connection. The technology achieves a stable broadband connection speed of 30 MB per second. The technology is currently in various pilot collaborations with companies around the world, on October 1, 2019 Signify and Vodafone announced a collaboration on the topic of LiFi.

Horticulture

For over 75 years, Signify has been developing ways to use lighting technology to improve agriculture and horticulture. By switching to LED technology, new paths could also be opened up in this area. Technological innovations, such as light recipes and light spectra tailored to individual plant species, may continue to increase the importance of energy-efficient and growth-promoting lighting for Signify and the entire lighting industry.

sustainability

The lighting company was placed on the CDP Climate Change A list as one of 139 companies . The CDP organization operates a global system of disclosure of data with regard to environmental influences. These are rated on a scale from A to D, with A being the best possible grade.

In September 2016, Signify launched a sustainability program with goals over a period of five years under the title “Brighter Lives, Better World”. This includes commitments to safety and environmental protection, such as the reduction of CO 2 emissions, the avoidance of landfill waste and the delivery of a total of over 2 billion energy-efficient LED lamps and lights by the end of 2020. By 2018, CO 2 - Balance sheet has been reduced by 49% and the share of sales with products, systems and services that offer ecological and social advantages increased to 79%.
