Sigurd Hoel (born December 14, 1890 in Nord-Odal , † October 14, 1960 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer who was also politically active. In his works he combined social criticism with eroticism and satire .

life and work

Hoel first appeared in 1922 with Veien vi gaar , and in 1927 he became known with Syndere i sommersol (1932: Sünder am Meer , 2006: A little summer sin ), which was filmed twice, in 1934 and again in 2002. The novel En dag i oktober (German 2001: One day in October ), published in 1931, describes in individual episodes the events in a middle-class apartment building in Oslo in 1930.

At the beginning, in the 1920s , Hoel was influenced by the psychoanalytic teaching of Sigmund Freud , but was politically active in various socialist and communist groups, e. B. in the Mot Dag founded by Erling Falk . When the Freud of principle, but also ostracized for political reasons Marxist psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich emigrated and 1933 from Germany, first in Copenhagen , from 1935 in Oslo settled, Hoel was one of the closest collaborators, from 1937 publisher founded by Reich freudomarxistischen Journal of Political Psychology and Sexual Economics . For this magazine he wrote a number of articles on current cultural and political issues, including a very critical position on the Moscow trials from a Marxist perspective. Sigurd Hoel was one of the Norwegian "cultural radical" authors who made the literary mastery of the experience of fascism and the German occupation their task and made use of the knowledge of psychoanalysis, especially that of Wilhelm Reich.

As Hoel important literary works are Veien til verdens end (1933; dt 1983. The road to the end of the world ), Mote ved Milepelen (1947; dt 1970. Encounter at mile marker ) and Troll rings (1958, dt 1980. The Troll ring ). For his book Møte ved Milepelen he received the Norwegian literary prize Bokhandlerprisen in 1948 .

Hoel also worked as a publishing editor at Gyldendal Norsk Forlag . He actively campaigned for the Riksmål language and was chairman of the Riksmålsforbundet from 1956 to 1959.
