from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sikandar Jahan Begum (* 1818 ; † November 30, 1868 ) was the regent of the princely state of Bhopal .

In 1844 Sikander Begum succeeded her mother Qudsia as regent of Bhopal. Like her mother, she disregarded the Parda rules. She was trained in martial arts and fought many fights during her reign (1844–1868).

During the Indian Uprising of 1857 , she sided with the British Empire. The revolts against the British in Bhopal and the surrounding area were suppressed in the early stages. She also did a lot for public welfare - she built roads and fortified forts. She also built the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) and the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace).

In 1861 she was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Star of India and in 1866 made Knight Grand Commander of the same order.
