Silver quadriga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The silver quadriga is a medal marketed as Germany's first silver investment. It is intended as an alternative to coins minted in silver such as the American Silver Eagle , Maple Leaf and the Vienna Philharmonic . In the first edition year 2009, it was minted in an edition of 500,000 and has been available since September 2009. In 2010, the limit on the amount of coinage was lifted. The minting is done by the Berlin State Mint .

The fine weight of the silver quadriga is one troy ounce , i.e. about 31.1 grams. The fineness of the silver is given as 999/1000, its diameter is 37 mm. The issue price is based on the precious metal price. However, no face value is given, as is the case with their investment competitors such as Silver Eagle (USD 1), Maple Leaf (CAD 5) and Vienna Philharmonic (EUR 1.50). It is therefore not a coin, but a medal . The VAT rate is 19%.

As a motif on the front of the medal, the namesake, the Quadriga of the Brandenburg Gate, is shown . A traditional motif was chosen for the back, the oak leaves . Only the year of issue is changed annually. A gold version is also available, but not particularly well known.

For the anniversary “20 years of German unity” there is also a special edition 1/2 ounce fine silver with the inscription: “Germany - reunited on October 3, 1990”. The circulation is 250,000 pieces.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a new edition of 1 ounce fine silver was released in 2014 with the inscription: "GERMANY - FALL OF THE WALL - 9 NOVEMBER 1989". The motif of the silver quadriga has been redesigned every year since 2018.
