Silver plate from large floors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fragmented archaeological find from the Great Migration Period from the hacked silver in the treasure of Großbodungen from the early fifth century AD is referred to as the silver plate from Großbodungen . The treasure was discovered and recovered in May 1936 near Großbodungen in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

Find description

In Großbodungen one and a half kilometers south of the village, eleven gold coins were found while chopping potatoes and in September 1936 another seven gold coins, a lump of silver (about 800 grams of silver) and fragments of a bronze vessel. A total of 21 solidi from the fourth and fifth centuries AD were available for investigation. Underneath was a solidus that was perforated and later set as a jewelry hanger. There were also fragments of later Roman silver vessels. The treasure trove was acquired by the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle.

Wilhelm Grünhagen interprets a round, relief-decorated, rather solid silver plate in the artistic and craftsmanship as the gift of a late Roman emperor. Despite the fragmentation, it is easy to see that an enthroned ruler is shown surrounded by four armed people. The precious stones on the shoes and the cingulum ("belt"), pearls and gold brocade, seat and foot box of the figure depicted in representative costume support this interpretation of the emperor of the late Roman Empire.

interpretation

The owner of the treasure and the reasons for a landfill have not yet been revealed by research. Wilhelm Grünhagen assumes that it is the collected and buried wages of an " old Thuringian " elite warrior who has left the Roman military . The gold coins and hacked silver were apparently deposited near the Hasenburg . It is traditionally assumed in prehistoric and early historical research that the castle complex on the Asenberg ("Eschenberg") was already in use at the time of the rule of an old Thuringian elite in the Thuringian region.

exhibition

The outstanding find is part of the collection of the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle an der Saale .
