Wilhelm Grünhagen

Wilhelm Grünhagen (born December 20, 1915 in Hameln , † February 12, 1993 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Wilhelm Grünhagen studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History, Classical Philology and Art History at the University of Halle . He received his doctorate in 1939 with the dissertation “The Treasure Find from Gross Bodungen”. Since 1945 he was the first full-time curator of the collection of antiquities at the University of Erlangen , where he also received his habilitation in 1953, in 1964 as an adjunct professor, and in 1981 as an honorary professor.

Since November 1954 Grünhagen was a consultant at the Madrid department of the German Archaeological Institute , in October 1959 he became its second director. From 1956 he directed the excavations of Munigua . On June 1, 1961, he became the first director at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin . From November 1971 until his retirement in 1980 he was first director of the Madrid department of the German Archaeological Institute.
