Anna Silvia Modig (born July 8, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish journalist , television and radio presenter and politician ( Vasemmistoliitto ). Modig was a member of the Finnish Parliament between 2011 and 2019 . She has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2019 European elections .

Life

Professional career

Silvia Modig grew up as part of the Swedish minority in an eastern suburb of Helsinki. At the age of 18 she started working for Yleisradio 's children's television . She later moderated the program Popkult of the former station Yle Teema and numerous other programs.

Political commitment

In 2008 Modig ran in local elections as an independent on the list of Vasemmistoliitto and won a seat on the Helsinki City Council. She was re-elected in the 2012 and 2017 local elections.

In parallel to her community involvement, she ran for Vasemmistoliitto in the 2011 elections to the Finnish Parliament , of which she also became a member, and won a mandate. She defended this in the 2015 elections .

In the parliamentary elections in 2019 , she lost her mandate, but ran parallel to be first on the list for her party in the European elections . Vasemmistoliitto won 6.9 percent and thus one of the 13 Finnish seats in the European Parliament. Modig moved in straight away and joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For her group, she is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and an alternate member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality .

Private

Silvia Modig is openly gay. Until 2011 she was a registered civil partnership with the Finnish artist and writer Rakel Liekki . Modig has been married to Meri Valkama since 2019, who works as the press officer of the Helsinki local association of Vasemmistoliitto.
