Sim Van der Ryn

Sim Van der Ryn (* around 1935 in the Netherlands ) is an American architect. He is considered one of the leading representatives of so-called “sustainable architecture”, which observes the principles of physical and social ecology in architecture and environmentally friendly design. He is also active as a researcher and educator.

Life

Due to the Second World War , Sim van der Ryn's family left the Netherlands in 1939 and settled in Kew Gardens , a settlement in the New York borough of Queens , and later in Great Neck , a village near New York . He grew up very close to nature, and he was particularly fascinated by the details of nature. He received his education at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , where he also received a state architectural license and admission to work nationwide. He lived in California for a long time.

In the second half of the twentieth century, when research was on the rise, Van der Ryn and other architects and designers were able to pave the way for new techniques, systems, materials, and solutions for design to create environments compatible with the Place and the respective climate should be in harmony and be able to respond well to human needs.

Van der Ryn was named California State Architect in the government of Governor Jerry Brown. During this time, he developed the first government-initiated energy development program in the United States and introduced the adoption of energy and handicap access standards for all public works in California.

In the 1970s, Van der Ryn founded the Farallones Institute to promote a nationwide awareness of “an ecologically consistent lifestyle”.
