Simnas ( German Simnen ) is a town in the Rajongemeinde Alytus in the district of Alytus in Lithuania . It is located about 70 km southwest of Vilnius .

Simnas received Magdeburg city rights in 1626 .

In his novella The Wanderer Between Two Worlds , Walter Flex reports on the trench warfare near Simnen between the Russian and German armies , in which Flex's war comrade and friend Ernst Wurche was killed in 1915. The wandering bird Wurche, who is portrayed in the book as the ideal image of the German volunteer and front officer, was buried near Simnen.
