The wanderer between both worlds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wanderer between the two worlds: A War Experience is an autobiographical novella published by Walter Flex in 1916 that deals with the experiences of the First World War . It is considered the author's main work.

content

Der Wanderer was written in 1915 and 1916. Flex dedicated the novella to his comrade- in- arms and friend Ernst Wurche, who fell at Simnen in 1915 , the "ideal of the German volunteer and front-line officer, but also of the new man and leader of the two worlds, earth and heaven, Life and death, equals close ”. Prose and poetry complement each other; the work contains, among other things, the poem wild geese rushing through the night . Due to the sudden death of the author in 1917, "the unity of literature and life seemed to exist", which helped the work to break through.

reception

In the interwar period , Der Wanderer became a bestseller (6th place in German-language literature) and a cult book of the younger generation; later it was taken over by the national socialist ideology . The work had a significant influence on the German youth movements. "In addition to Ernst Jüngers and Erich Maria Remarque's depictions, The Wanderer Between the Two Worlds is still the best known from the First World War - measured against them, the document of a questionable childish idealism." According to Kindler's Literature Lexicon , the book represents an "idealistic distortion and aestheticization of the War ”. Hans Martin Sutermeister was inspired by Flex to write his own autobiographical novella Between Two Worlds (1942), which contains medical reflections on young people from the interwar period.
