The Simojärvi [ ˈsimɔjærvi ] is a lake in northern Finland . It is located in the municipality of Ranua in the south of the province of Lapland . The Simojärvi is 176 m high and covers an area of 89.93 km². It ranks 50th in the list of the largest lakes in Finland. The Simojoki River rises from the Simojärvi and flows into the Gulf of Bothnia via Simo . A large part of the holiday homes ( mökki ) in Ranua municipality is located on Simojärvi. The fish-rich lake is a popular fishing spot.
