history

The Jewish Simon family had lived in Coburg since 1806, when the brothers Joseph and Salomon Simon, merchants from Hildburghausen , were allowed to settle in the city. The family had their own prayer room in Joseph Simon's house at Herrngasse 4. The private cemetery was laid out in an open field in front of the city before 1860. It was surrounded by a wall and covered an area of 12.50 acres . Its use ended when the family moved away in 1913. The stones of the cemetery wall on the south and east sides were later largely used to expand the Rottenbach. After 1932 the cemetery was destroyed, the remains were neglected until 1962 when it was redesigned to create a small green area. Six sandstone tombstones ( mazewot ) have been preserved in the cemetery , heavily weathered, some as fragments. Below is a tomb with a column from 1898 for Martha Oblet born. Simon, who was born in Coburg in 1868 and died in Paris .
