Single-chip cloud computer

The single-chip cloud computer (SCC) is an experimental processor design that was created in research facilities at Intel . As part of Intel's Tera-scale Research Program , hardware and software approaches based on a very large number of computing units are examined. The first generation of processors from this initiative was the 80-core Intel Polaris . The second generation is the SCC (code name: Rock Creek ).

The processor consists of 24 units that are connected by means of a grid-like network and can communicate with one another via this. Each of these units consists of two P54C processor cores, each with a 16 kiB L1 instruction cache , 16 kiB L2 data cache and 256 kiB L2 cache.

The difference to conventional processors with several processor cores is that the programmer can exert great influence on the communication between the processors. In previous multi-core processors , the connection medium between the processor cores was used exclusively for the transport and synchronization of memory contents. With the SCC, the processor network can be used to enable processes that are executed on the processor cores to communicate directly with one another without using the external memory. The SCC is more like a cluster on a single chip than a multi-core processor in the usual sense.

In 2010, Intel was awarded the Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment (IKU) in the "Environmentally Friendly Technologies" category for its "Single-chip Cloud Computer" , because it will help make future data centers more energy-efficient.
