Sings Reign Rebuilder is the debut album by the Canadian post-rock band Set Fire to Flames . It was released on Alien8 Recordings and FatCat Records in the fall of 2001.

History of origin

Guitarist Mike Moya on the making of the album:

“We decided to take a few pictures. Everyone got together, set up their instruments, and we just played. Sometimes we composed pieces while we played, sometimes we just mixed stuff up and recorded it and it sounded good. We didn't want to repeat Godspeed You and play with a big band all the time, so we always picked out a few people at random - hey, you and you, play something together! We spent about two weeks recording and in the end we had a lot of material that we had to cut down to an album. "

concept

Although it is not intended to be a concept album, recurring motifs appear in the album, consisting of field recordings , which deal with theoretical and practical concepts relating to the topics of climate , rebellion , gentrification and love .

The album was recorded in an ancient house ( called Ontario by the band 15 ). The dilapidated house was slated for demolition. Quote from the liner notes: "Your bulldozers and wrecking balls can make sawdust out of the dilapidated stairs and squeaky wooden boards - but they cannot destroy the recordings that were made here". So the album makes negative references to gentrification and social change , similar to the band's main project: Godspeed You! Black Emperor .

Therefore, many tones and sounds that are normally removed from the recordings were deliberately kept in the songs. These include squeaky doors, rustling paper and noises from outside. Probably the most famous sound comes from an ambulance driving by next to the house and its siren switched on in the song Love Song for 15 Ontario . The vehicle was later honored as a guest musician.
