Sinmara is an Icelandic pagan metal - band from Reykjavík . The Reykjavík Grapevine newspaper names the group among the best known representatives of the younger Icelandic black metal scene. It is named after the Nordic - Germanic goddess Sinmara of the same name , the wife of the fire giant Surtur .

history

Sinmara is the successor project of the black metal formation Chao, which was founded in 2008 and released an EP on March 14, 2012 with the title Spiritus Sankti on the Trondheim label Terratur Possessions. At that time the line-up consisted of singer Ólafur Guðjónsson, guitarist Garðar Jónsson, bassist Ingólfur Hallgrímsson (who was previously active in the death and thrash metal formation Blood Feud) and drummer Bjarni Einarsson (who was already involved in black metal projects Revolter, Finngálken and Abonimor). With the separation from Hallgrímsson in 2013, the group changed their name to Sinmara, at the same time the Irishman Stephen Lockhart, alias Wann, who had migrated to Iceland, joined the band as bassist, who had appeared musically since 2009 through his solo project Rebirth of Nefast. On August 28, 2014, the group released their debut album Aphotic Womb again via Terratur Possessions. A joint split release with Misþyrming followed in January 2017, followed by an independent EP entitled Within the Weaves of Infinity in August of the same year. Soon there was another line-up change on bass, so that Sigurgeir Lúðvíksson took over for Wann. Lúðvíksson is also active in the bands Azoic and Malignant Mist. The group has been under contract with the German music label Ván Records since 2018 .
