prehistory

Invitation to the "Soirée dansante"

Although his father was against his son starting a musical career, his first concert as a conductor and composer took place on October 15, 1844 in the Casino Dommayer in Hietzing , a suburb of the imperial city of Vienna near the Schönbrunn Palace .

It was an important day for musical Vienna, because after all, the father was very successful, and the fact that the son is virtually opposing him with his first appearance meant the greatest attention from the population.

Casino Dommayer , which was very popular at the time, had invited to a “ Soirée dansante”, but due to the large number of spectators, the dance floor was so full that dancing was out of the question.

The appearance of Johann Strauss Sohn meant that from that day on his father was no longer called Johann Strauss, but Johann Strauss father.

First performance of the waltz

Although the waltz Sinngedichte is his first opus, the waltz Gunstwerber op.4 was played first, then the debut Quadrille op.2 , the Polka Herzenslust op.3 and then, as a show of respect for his father, his Waltz Loreley Rhine sounds .

The opening bars of the waltz, meaning poems, borrowed music from both Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss' father and was able to withstand the high expectations of the audience and the press, which was also confirmed by the cheering applause from the audience.

Later, in the feuilleton of the Wanderer by Franz Wiest, the words “Good night, Lanner! Good evening, Strauss father! Good morning, Strauss son! ”.
