Sipaway is an island in the Negros Occidental Province in the Philippines . This is located off the east coast of the island of Negros in the Tanon Strait . The Barangay Ermita is located on it , it had 2,215 inhabitants in 2007. The island is administered from the city of San Carlos City .

Geography & Ecology

Sipaway is separated from the main island by the Refugio Canal. The island is about 7 kilometers long, 700 meters wide and is a popular destination for diving tourists from all over the world. In front of the island are the coral reefs Camote and San Juan. The entire Tanon Strait is designated as a marine reserve. It is home to populations of rare marine mammals such as the small sperm whale ( Kogia simus ) and the broad-billed dolphin ( Peponocephala electra ). A total of 30 different bird species live on the island. In the south of the island there is a small salt water lagoon. The small hydropower plant Balea has been generating 39 kilowatts of electricity on the island since 2008.

Ballet tree

The island is home to the oldest balete tree in the Visayas archipelago , around which there is a myth. A young man climbed in the center of the tree and was gone for two days. When he returned, he told his family that he had discovered paradise. He found gold, a fantastic house and a beautiful wife. To this day, young men are trying to find this place again.
