The Siphon Sitterstollen (old spelling "Siphon") is a building in the supply line of the Sitter to the Gübsensee , which feeds the Kubel power station.
The Sitter tunnel crosses the Urnäsch gorge west of Stein AR . Originally an aqueduct was planned, for reasons of cost and lack of building material the siphon was chosen. With a siphon, the water is the same on both sides, no pumps are needed to bring it back to the initial level. If the water flows, energy is lost through friction in the water and on the walls and the outflow must be a little deeper than the influence.
The siphon consists of a 1600 mm wide sheet metal pipe with a wall thickness of 5 mm (above) to 7 mm (below). Its lowest point is 35 m below the level of the tunnel. The maximum volume flow is 4 m 3 / s, corresponding to a flow velocity of around 2 m / s.
The siphon was built under the direction of the St. Gallen civil engineer Louis Kürsteiner and completed in 1904.
