Sir Elwoodin hiljaiset värit (literal translation: Sir Elwoods quiet colors ) is a Finnish jazz , pop and rock group from Kannelmäki on the outskirts of Helsinki .
Musical
The group itself describes their style as kellarijatsi or keskiolutjatsi (roughly: basement jazz or beer jazz ), but their pieces also follow common pop and rock schemes in structure and melody. The instrumentation is often extensive, with many wind instruments and without electronic amplifications and modulations. The texts mostly deal with everyday topics such as love, farewell, life in the suburbs or getting older, or give descriptive scenic impressions and snapshots. Similar to the music, the lyrics are often underlaid with a slight melancholy.
Some of her better-known pieces are thematically retained cover versions of international songs ( Älä itke - in German " Don't cry " - is Don't Cry No Tears by Neil Young , Kaduilla Kallion - "In the streets of Kallio " - is In The Neighborhood by Tom Waits ), but the majority of the songs are original compositions. The band has not yet revealed whether the name has a deeper meaning, and if so, which one. The Finnish singing group has not released any albums outside of Finland .
Band history
The band was formed when Juha Lehti and Juha Saaresaho, who met while working at the Myyrmäki youth center in northern Helsinki, began recording demo tapes with Pete Loikala in 1988. After initially only being known locally, the band landed their first major success in 1993 with the single Viimeisellä rannalla . From then on, records and singles regularly reached the top 20 of the Finnish sales charts. The greatest success compilation Varjoja, varkaita ja vanhoja valokuvia and the album Kymmenen tikkua laudalla achieved gold status, the highest chart position of an album was so far number 2 (1999, for Pyhää kamaa .)
On June 13, 2004, Riku Järvinen, bassist and violinist in the group, died in an accident. However, the first plans to split up the band afterwards were put aside when they met Järvinen's friend Luomanmäki at a memorial concert for Järvinen and Järvinen joined the band for him. Thus, after the second greatest hits record, which had already been produced, a new single with Suomineito and later a new album could be released.
Sir Elwoodin vieraskirja
In 2014 singer Lehti and guitarist Virtanen started a side project called Sir Elwoodin vieraskirja ( Sir Elwood's guest book ). In early 2015 the album Sinä iltana sataa was released and a little more than a year later a second album called Runoilija was released .
