Siron Franco (2003)

Siron Franco (born July 25, 1947 in Cidade de Goiás ) is a Brazilian painter, draftsman and sculptor.

Life

Siron Franco comes from a poor family and has ten siblings. After childhood and youth in Goiânia , he married Goiaci Milhomen before moving to São Paulo . In São Paulo from 1969 to 1971 he worked with the German painter, graphic artist and publicist Walter Lewy , who was expelled because of his Jewish origin and who was the most important representative of Brazilian surrealism. In 1975 he won the International Prize for Painting at the São Paulo Biennale , and at the 24º Salão Nacional de Arte Moderna in the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes the “prêmio de viagem ao exterior”, a promotional award for overseas travel, which he won between 1976 and 1978 used for stays in Europe.

The independent and extensive work with references to surrealism , fantastic painting and modernism reflects Brazilian culture and contemporary art in Europe and America. Part of the artist's program is the attempt to intervene in the social and political process as a participating citizen, sometimes also in the language of art. Some of Franco's installations have the character of interventions and can be interpreted as a critique of conditions in the cities of Brazil. With the “Monumento às Nações Indígenas”, the monument to the indigenous nations , Franco honors the creativity of the Brazilian indigenous people as a contribution to Brazilian art and culture, and also as one of the sources of his own art. The monument, created in 1992 and comprising more than 3700 square meters, made of 500 concrete steles each 2.30 meters high, was destroyed by vandalism.

The painterly work of Siron Franco has a solid presence in galleries and museums in Brazil and abroad. Although there are pictures in the overall work that appear striking and decorative at first glance, the imagery is never harmless. She consciously alludes to European concepts of modernity and postmodernism; friendly irritating like Magritte , dissecting like Grosz and Bacon . The iconography conveys a critical subtext that is understood in Brazilian and Latin American cultures (also with regard to current events).
