The “Sisi” monument.

The Sisi monument in honor of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, known as "Sisi", is located on the Altenberg in Garitz , a district of the Bavarian spa town of Bad Kissingen in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen .

The monument is one of the Bad Kissingen architectural monuments and is registered in the Bavarian list of monuments under the number D-6-72-114-127 .

history

Empress Elisabeth spent several spa stays in Bad Kissingen (most recently a few months before her death), during which she also enjoyed going for walks on the Altenberg. In her honor, the "Committee for the erection of a monument to the memory of Her Majesty Empress Elisabeth of Austria", founded in 1904, erected a memorial plaque in 1907, which is located a few meters behind the round temple.

The Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik based in Geislingen an der Steige cast the panel with a portrait of the Empress based on a model by Emanuel Gerhart , who came from the Bohemian Reichenberg . The planting around the memorial plaque comes from the royal spa gardener Wolfgang Singer. According to the Saale-Zeitung , the sculptor Balthasar Schmitt from Aschach (now part of Bad Bocklet ) is said to have submitted a free draft for the Sisi monument in 1906, but this cannot be confirmed by the relevant file of the state spa administration. There may be a mix-up with the hall warden J. Th. Schmitt, who provided a plot of land for the memorial free of charge.
