Sister Fa

Sister Fa , actually Fatou Mandiang Diatta , (* 1982 in Dakar , Senegal ) is a Senegalese rapper and activist against genital mutilation in Africa.

Life

Sister Fa produced their first album as a demo tape, which was released in 2002 and won the Senegalese Hip-Hop Award. In a subsequent film by the French film producer and documentary filmmaker Philipp Mogan , she introduced the Senegalese hip-hop scene . In 2003 she got a record deal from the record company Fight N 'Forget (FN'F) and her songs were subsequently released on various West African music samplers . In the same year she was the representative of Senegal at the Festival De Rap Feminin International in Conakry (Guinea) .

The first album Hip Hop Yaw La Fal was released in Senegal in 2005, for which she was awarded the Senegalese Hip-Hop Award for "best new discovery of the year". Sister Fa moved to Berlin and worked on her song here, which is described as a fusion of rap, soul, afropop, world and reggae. With her new band she came into contact with the record label Piranha Musik , which recorded the sampler Many Lessons - Pop and Islam and signed a recording contract with her. In 2009, the album Sarabah - Tales From The Flipside Of Paradise was released as a European debut , in which Sister Fa accuses, among other things, her political message against genital mutilation , which she herself also experienced, and the forced marriage of young girls in her home country.

In 2008 she traveled to Senegal with the support of the Goethe Institute and campaigned for her éducation sans mutilation campaign here . Together with the women's rights organization Terre des Femmes , Sister Fa recorded a clip on the topic of Stop Female Genital Mutilation . Since September 2009 she has been supporting a campaign to protect the sponsored girls of the aid organizations Plan International , WorldVision , Kindernothilfe and ChildFund from genital mutilation.
