Sister Rose's Passion is an American documentary - short film by Oren Jacoby from the year 2004. The film is a paean to Sister Rose Thering , since 67 years a nun with the Dominicans , was and whose life mission was anti-Semitism to fight. Sister Rose's Passion was nominated in 2005 for Best Documentary Short Film.

The life of Rose Thering is traced with archive material. On August 9, 1920, the sixth of eleven children, she grew up in Wisconsin and became a Dominican nun at the age of 16 . During her upbringing, especially in a Catholic environment, she was u. a. confronted with the fact that Jews were labeled as murderers of Christians. In 1953 she made her bachelor's degree at Dominican College in Racine , followed by her master's degree at the College of St. Thomas in 1957 and finally her doctorate from Saint Louis University four years later.

During her college education, she came across Catholic textbooks, which she now categorized critically, and was shocked by the depiction of Jews. She got as much teaching material as possible and examined it scientifically, what could possibly be. a. reflected in her dissertation in 1961. This led to the publication of Nostra Aetate ( In Our Time ), a document published in 1965 at the request of Pope John XXIII. published at the Second Vatican Council . Since then, her life's work has been to fight anti-Semitism. The film closes with a review of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ .

Awards

At the Tribeca Film Festival 2004 the film won the award for best short documentary film.

There was also a nomination in the Best Documentary Short Film category at the 2005 Academy Awards .

Neil Karassik wrote on DiscLand: All in all , 'Sister Rose's Passion' is a presentable, fascinating documentary that repeatedly stimulates the Catholic suffering / shame reflex with relish. He gave the film 6 out of 10 points.
