Sister Souljah

Sister Souljah (* 1964 in New York as Lisa Williamson ) is an American author , rapper and activist .

She attracted media attention by the same named Sister Souljah moment for the United States presidential election, 1992 . The term describes a statement or situation in which politicians (then Bill Clinton) distance themselves from extremist supporters and interest groups of their own party (including Souljah) and thus make them suitable for the mainstream .

life and work

When she was ten, her family moved to the suburbs of Englewood, New Jersey . She attended Dwight Morrow High School and worked, among other things, as an intern in the House of Representatives. Souljah received various awards and a scholarship during her school years. She graduated from Rutgers University with a major in United States History and African Studies .

In 1995 Souljah published his first memoir, No Disrespect . The Coldest Winter Ever is a novel published in 1999. The 2008 sequel Midnight: A Gangster Love Story and Midnight and the Meaning of Love (2011) made the New York Times bestseller list . A Deeper Love Inside: the Porsche Santiaga Story and A Moment of Silence: Midnight III were also bestsellers. Some of her books are particularly popular with prisoners. Allusions to her work can be found in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black .

She is married and has a son.
