Sisters Love

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sisters Love were an American soul and funk group. The group consisted of the four singers Lillie Fort , Gwendolyn Berry , Merry Clayton (replaced by Jeannie Long in 1969 ) and Vermettya Boyster .

history

The Sisters Love emerged in 1968 from the group The Raelets , which was founded in 1956 by Ray Charles as a backing group. Her first single "This Time Tomorrow / I Know You Love Me" was released in 1968 on the small Manchild record label in Los Angeles .

Then the group was discovered for the still young label A&M Records and received a recording contract. Between 1969 and 1972 The Sisters Love released a number of soul / funk singles there and in 1971 they had their biggest US hit with “Are You Lonely / Ring Once”.

As the only black group at A&M at the time, they were soon frustrated with their record label and switched to Motown in 1972 . All of the singles for Motown recorded The Sisters Love at MoWest Studios in Hollywood and released them on the Motown sub-label of the same name. In 1973 they went on a world tour as opening act for The Jackson Five .

After Motown Records moved its headquarters from Detroit to Los Angeles in 1972 , the MoWest sub-label became obsolete and closed in 1973. A whole series of previously announced LPs could therefore no longer appear, including an album by The Sisters Love, which is still on hold today. The last singles were "My Love Is Yours / You've Got My Mind" and the UK- only "I'm learning to trust my man" before The Sisters Love broke up in 1973.

Since the group only published singles for which high collector prices are paid today, The Sisters Love was denied great success during its lifetime. In 2006, the rare groove label Soul Jazz Records released the singles compilation "Give Me Your Love" with 16 pieces by the group.

Give me your love

The Sisters Love's best-known track is "Give Me Your Love". In the early eighties, New York DJ Danny Krivit released an eight-minute remix of the piece, making it known to a wider disco and rare grooved audience. The original version later appeared on various rare groove and deep funk compilations. The Robbie Williams / Kylie Minogue duo "Kids", released in 2000, is essentially based on a sample from "Give Me Your Love".

The Sisters Love originally released the track in 1973 as the B-side of their Motown single "(I Could Never Make) A Better Man Than You". The piece was completely missing from the promo single for DJs, so it did not become a hit at first. "Give Me Your Love" was originally written by Curtis Mayfield and appeared in 1972 on the soundtrack of the blaxploitation film Superfly .
