The Sisu KB-46 is an off-road truck prototype manufactured in 1968 by the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Suomen Autoteollisuus Ab (SAT), Karis, Finland. The payload of the three-axle vehicle with all-wheel drive is three tons off-road. It was produced according to the specifications of the Finnish armed forces to pull heavy artillery.

Technical specifications

The KB-46 is equipped with a 13.12 liter Leyland O.801 V8 diesel engine and the Sisu engine code is BY. The prototype was the first Sisu with this type of engine.

The chassis is constructed as a tubular frame. The fuel tank is integrated into the frame. The vehicle is equipped with the “Sisu Nemo” hydraulic trailer transmission system.

The tires are from Goodyear and the axles are equipped with a tire pressure control system. They have a particularly small volume of air compared to other tires in similar applications.

The prototype had a rectangular driver's cab, which was used in the same form in the series production of the Sisu M series. An additional cabin was attached between the driver's cabin and the flatbed.

The curb weight was 8,000 kg and the payload was only 3,000 kg off-road. The largest weight of the normal trailer is 5,000–7,000 kg and the trailer with a driven axle is 7,000–10,000 kg.

properties

The prototype was exhibited with a Tampella 122 K 60 cannon, equipped with hydraulic transmission, at the Finnish Agricultural Fair on the stand of the Finnish Armed Forces. Neither the vehicle nor the cannon went into series production because the time for development was too short and there were too many new technical facilities for which no prior knowledge was available. The engine type also proved to be technically unusable for the KB-46.

The KB-46 was never approved for use by the Finnish armed forces, but the prototype stayed with the armed forces. The vehicle was parked in the vehicle depot in need of repair for several years until it was repaired and taken to a museum in the 1970s.
