The Sisu SA-150 is a truck introduced in 1982 by the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Sisu-Auto . This truck is mainly used by the military. The drive formula is 4 × 4 .

planning

Based on experience with the Sisu A-45 and newer, heavier cannons, the Finnish armed forces realized that more powerful vehicles were required. Sisu-Auto then decided to start a new medium-duty off-road truck project.

The planning started in 1978 at the Sisu Auto headquarters on Flemingstrasse, Helsinki. The project manager was the head of the planning department, Seppo Kokkola. The other members were Kari Lindholm, Veli Vallinoja, Uoti Hartikainen and Kalevi Kakko, the main designers at Sisu-Auto.

The starting point was NATO compatibility; You can see that in the tire size of 14.00-20, for example, and the look of the truck. Production of the first prototype began in November 1979 and the truck was started for the first time in the following February. In April he was brought to Rovajärvi, followed by a six-month test program. The prototype proved itself in the tests of the armed forces.

The name of the first prototype was SA-140 , it was powered by a Valmet 611 turbodiesel. The power was 140 kW. The top speed is 100 km / h and with the largest reduction ratio it is 1.6 km / h. The prototype was significantly larger and more powerful than the A-45 with roughly the same curb weight as the total mass of the A-45.

Sisu Auto gave the car the nickname Masi because the nickname of its predecessor A-45 was "Proto-Sisu", which was not pleasant for the manufacturer. Masi comes from "Maasto-Sisu", Boden-Sisu , and is also the name of Beetle Bailey in Finnish.

production

A more powerful engine with 150 kW was installed in the series model with the model name SA-150 . Series production began in Hämeenlinna in 1982 and the first batch of ten vehicles was handed over to the armed forces in October of the same year. From the following year there was an annual production of around 60 pieces. Almost all vehicles were produced in Hämeenlinna, with the exception of two small delivery lots that were made in Karis.

Technical specifications

Sisu SA-150 from behind

Many identical parts from other Sisu models were used in the SA-150, including the first "XA-180" Pasis .

engine

The engine is a six-cylinder, four-stroke turbo direct injection diesel with water cooling and a 6.6 liter displacement of the Valmet 611 CSBA type. The maximum engine output is 150 kW and the maximum torque 680 Nm.

Transmission and chassis

The clutch is a single-disc dry clutch to which a six-speed transmission from ZF is connected. There is also a two-speed reduction gear. The front and rear axles are driven rigid axles with leaf springs. The front axle has additional hydraulic shock absorbers. The brakes are pneumatic S-cam drum brakes.

The axle load is evenly distributed between the two axles and the frame can absorb strong torsions, so that all wheels are in constant contact with the ground even in difficult terrain. The steering is equipped with power assistance.

Cabin and accessories

The cab is designed as a forward control cab for three people. It has heating and is equipped with a roof hatch. The cabin and the loading space are elastically attached to the frame, which secure the structures against twisting. The driver's seat is adjustable in length and height. The cabin is equipped with a heater with a two-stage fan, a sliding roof, windows and a support frame for the camouflage net.

The loading area is a steel structure with removable side panels and there is space for 26 people.

The electrical system is a 24-volt system and consists of two 12-volt 150 Ah batteries.

The SA-150 has an 8000 kg winch with 50 m wire rope that can be used on the front or back of the vehicle.

The tank volume is 225 liters.

properties

The maximum speed of the vehicle is 100 km / h and the range is 800 km. The off-road characteristics were good. The front angle of incidence is 42 ° and the rear angle of incidence is 39 °. The ground clearance is 40 cm and the maximum fording depth is one meter. The smallest turning circle diameter is 16.4 m.

variants

The SA-151 is a further development, the most important difference being a 100 mm wider loading area. This model was produced in 1990/1991.

use

The SA-150 was mainly used as a pulling device for heavy cannons. Its heavy "brother" SA-240 has three axes.
