The Sisu SA-240 is a heavy all-wheel drive off-road truck introduced in 1984 by the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Oy Sisu-Auto Ab . This truck is only used by the Finnish military , mainly as a towing vehicle for heavy cannons . The drive formula is 6 × 6, the gross vehicle weight is 22 tons.

planning

The Sisu SA-150 medium off-road truck turned out to be too weak to pull the heaviest cannons in the Finnish armed forces . As a result, a new 6 × 6 truck was proposed as a solution and development began in 1983. The first two prototypes with the designation SA-180 were equipped with a Valmet 611 turbodiesel engine with a maximum output of 180 kW. The transmission comes from ZF and is equipped with a torque converter, which enables flexible driving on and off-road. The system was tested on a journey from Hämeenlinna to Sodankylä , which was driven in the same gear.

After the field tests with the Valmet 611 turbo diesel engine, this was replaced by a Cummins turbo diesel engine LTA 10 330T / T4 with a displacement of 10 liters, and the model was given the designation SA-240 . The vehicle soon got the nickname Rasi , which means something like Raska's Masi ("heavy Masi ").

production

The first produced SA-240 with the configuration Sisu SA240 CKH-6 × 6/4950 + 1440 ( wheelbase + rear wheel center distance in mm) was handed over to the Finnish armed forces in May 1984. The vehicle has an extra long wheelbase and a removable anti-ship missile system MTO 85 . The first SA-240 manufactured for the artillery with the configuration Sisu SA 240 CKH-6 × 6/3740 + 1440 (wheelbase + rear wheel center distance in mm) was handed over at the end of the following year. A first series of 13 vehicles was produced in 1987; series production began in 1988. The SA-240 was replaced in 1990 by the further developed SA-241, but production was discontinued in 1991 again.

Technical specifications

Inside view of the SA-240

The SA-240 is mainly based on the lighter two-axle SA-150 .

Engine, transmission and chassis

The engine is a Cummins LTA 10 330T / T4 turbo diesel with an output of 246 kW. The ZF 8F1R transmission is equipped with an integrated torque converter. All three axles are driven, i.e. the drive formula is 6 × 6. The wheelbase between the rear axles was the longest on the market at the time, so it is possible to use snow chains . The frame is flexible and allows torsional rotation.

The curb weight of the early models is 8,800 kg with a payload of 9,200 kg. Later models weigh 10,000 kg and have a payload of 12,000 kg.

Cabin and superstructures

The cabin is mounted above the engine and has seats for the driver and two passengers. There is a powerful heater and a skylight. The loading area can carry 24 to 30 men and is covered by a tarpaulin, which is supported by a steel frame.

properties

The maximum speed of the SA-240 is 97 km / h, the range is 600 km. The off-road mobility is given by a flexible frame and good weight distribution. The maximum gradient is 60% and in the transverse direction 40%. The vehicle can climb steps 60 cm high and cross trenches one meter wide. The fording depth is a maximum of one meter.

variants

The further development of the SA-240 to the SA-241 took place in 1990/91, using a loading area that was 100 mm wider and making small cosmetic changes to the cabin and the structure. In addition, a bracket for a heavy machine gun with caliber 12.7 mm was attached to the top of the cabin.

use

The main purpose of the SA-240 is to pull heavy artillery for the Finnish armed forces.
