Sitio (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sitio or Sitio de ganado mayor , (also square Legua; Spanish Legua cuadrada ; English square league ), was a Mexican square measure. Already in 1567 the Vara (Castilian) was established as a yard and the basis of the official land measures in so-called New Spain .

definition

A legua (as a measure of length) always comprised 5000 vara. The Vara as a measure of length (and thus also the square Vara) was not the same length in different periods and areas and there were accordingly a large number of different conversion factors into the metric or Anglo-Saxon system of measurement depending on the time period and area. Attempts to standardize by central authorities were often not implemented locally, so that the Vara was not a clearly defined measure and detailed clarifications are necessary when reading historical literature.

The term sitio without an addition always meant the sitio de ganado mayor , the deviating definitions were each indicated by an addition. A legua cuadrada (and thus the Sitio de ganado Mayor ) comprised 25,000,000 vara cuadrada, which made up a different area depending on the underlying length of the vara.

There were differences between the pasture area and the elevator area. The Vara can be assumed to be 0.84596 meters long , converted to an area of around 17,891.2 square meters .

  • 1 sitio = 1755.61 hectares (1751.22 hectares)
  • Pasture area (cattle pasture for 1000 animals) for cattle , horses , donkeys , mules
    • 1 sitio de ganado mayor (large square hours) = 25 labores = 25 million square varas = 1750 hectares
  • Pasture area (for 1000 animals) for sheep , goats
    • 1 Sitio de ganado menor (small square hours) = 11,111,111 square varas = 7800 hectares (11,927,467 square meters)
  • Area of a grain and fulling mill
    • 1 Sitio para batan o molino = 2500 square varas = 0.2 hectares
