The Själevadsfjärden is a lake in the municipality of Örnsköldsvik in Sweden .

geography

The Själevadsfjärden is the second of three fjärden that the Moälven flows through in its lower reaches, and the largest of them. Billaberget is located on the north shore of the lake , below which the Billstabäcken flows into the fjärde. One of the tributaries of the fjärde is the Kallån on the right side of the lake. There are three small islands in Själevadsfjärden, the Prästholmarna. They can be reached by boat; the largest one has a rest area. At the lower end of the fjärde is Själevad with the Själevads kyrka . The connection to the third fjärde, Veckefjärden , is called Prästsundet. There is a bridge over the narrowing with European route 4 , it leads to Örnsköldsvik .

Shipping accidents

Two serious ship accidents occurred on Själevadsfjärden in 1701 and 1803 . Both times church visitors were on their way to Själevads kyrka when their boat capsized in stormy weather. On May 26, 1701, Prayer Sunday , a boat with 31 church visitors capsized in the middle of Själevadsfjärden. 30 of the passengers drowned and their bodies were found over the next eight days. The accident on June 26th 1803 happened at the same place as that of 1701, here too the boat capsized near the Prästholmarna. Of 48 passengers on board, 45 drowned. Most of the passengers were on their way to the christening of Pehr Jansson's daughter from Österalnö , and he and his entire family also drowned.

art

The painter Gunnar Wiberg (1894–1969) came from Överhörnäs and painted the oil painting Från Själevad , it shows a person in winter clothes coming ashore with a fish, in the background you can see his rowing boat and one of the islands in the fjärde.
