The Själevads kyrka is the Evangelical Lutheran Home Church in the same parish that the diocese of härnösand the Swedish Church belongs. The church is located in Själevad on the Moälven River , near Örnsköldsvik . In 1998 it was voted the most beautiful church in Sweden by the readers of Året Runt magazine . From the octagonal church you have a good view of the Själevadsfjärden and the course of the Moälven. Concerts are held in the church and there are several choirs.
Church building
The current church replaced a medieval one that was a little further downstream. The old church was a simple, rectangular building and was dedicated to Olaf the Saint . The interior walls were painted, but they were whitewashed during an eighteenth-century repair. On May 29, 1876, the demolition of the church began without prior permission. The church was built so robustly that it had to be blown up in the end. The action was kept secret until the end, as there was fear of strong protests from the population against the demolition.
Construction of the new church began in the same year, and it was consecrated on September 12, 1880 by Bishop Lars Lundgren . The style is partly neoclassical , the sides are decorated with columns like in a Greek temple. The interior is closed at the top by a dome, the current one was built in 1923 during a renovation.
