Skálholtsdómkirkja
The Evangelical Lutheran Skálholtsdómkirkja ( German Skálholter Domkirche ) is the cathedral church of the former Skálholt diocese , which stands on the Skálholt estate in southwest Iceland . As the bishopric of the country , Skálholt was considered the cultural center of Iceland for over seven centuries. The Reformation was introduced in the diocese in 1542, and the diocese has been occupied by Lutherans ever since.
History and equipment
On the site of today's cathedral church, previous buildings can be traced back to the early 11th century:
- Gissurarkirkja hvíta (1000 to after 1082)
- Gissurarkirkja biskups (after 1082 to 1153)
- Klængskirkja (1153 to 1309)
- Árnakirkja (1310 to 1527)
- Ögmundarkirkja (1527 to 1567)
- Gíslakirkja (1567 to 1650/1673)
- Brynjólfskirkja (1650 to 1802)
- Valgerðarkirkja (1802 to 1851)
- Sóknarkirkjan (1851 to 1963)
During excavations between 1952 and 1958, the sarcophagus of Bishop Páll Jónsson , who died in 1211, was found , which can now be seen in the crypt museum .
In 1956, on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the founding of the diocese, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the cathedral church, which was consecrated by Bishop Sigurbjörn Einarsson on July 21, 1963 in the presence of Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson . The construction of the cathedral church, which is 30 meters long from the main entrance to the apse , was supported by Norwegians , Swedes and Finns ; the main altarpiece was designed by the Icelander Nína Tryggvadóttir , the leaded glass windows were designed by her compatriot Gerður Helgadóttir .
organ
In the year of the consecration of the church , the Danish organ building workshop Frobenius built the organ with eleven stops , divided into two manuals and a pedal . In 2000 the work was expanded by six registers on a third manual. The current disposition (as of July 2012) is:

Every summer classical concerts by Icelandic and international artists take place in the cathedral during the “Sumartónleikar í Skálholtskirkju”.
