The Diocese of Skálholt was a diocese with a bishopric on the Skálholt estate ( Iceland ). It was founded in 1056 by Ísleifur Gissurarson (* shortly after 1000; † 1080) after the adoption of Christianity by the Althing of Iceland in 1000. He was a bishop and primate of Iceland.

There are no remains of the first cathedral . It was inaugurated on July 5, 1080 .

The Reformation was introduced in the Diocese of Skálholt in 1540 . The last Roman Catholic bishop was Sigmundur Eyjolfsson . Then the diocese was occupied by Lutherans. In 1797, as a result of severe earthquake damage to the entire bishopric and a general streamlining of the administration, the bishopric was moved to Reykjavík , and in 1801 the unified Lutheran state bishopric of Iceland was established when the diocese of Hólar fell back . As a result, Skálholt became a simple church district with a correspondingly simpler wooden church, which, however, was dilapidated again by 1860. The parishes in the area were merged and only one branch church (chapel) was set up in Skálholt . Since 1909, a Lutheran auxiliary bishop has resided in the historic bishopric of Skálholt - as in Hólar - to appreciate the historical importance of the two estates.

Today's Skálholtsdómkirkja was built on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the founding of the diocese in the years 1956 to 1963 and contains the first wall mosaic of an Icelandic church as an altarpiece .

Pope Paul VI in 1968 restored the lost bishopric as the Roman Catholic titular bishopric of Skálholt .
