Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom ( Skadden for short ) is an American law firm based in New York City .

With over 1,700 professionals in 22 offices and sales of more than 2.6 billion US dollars in 2018, she is one of the top-selling business legal advisors worldwide.

In German-speaking countries, Skadden has been represented in Frankfurt am Main since 1990 and in Munich since 2004 .

history

Skadden was founded in 1948 by Marshall Skadden, Les Arps and John Slate to represent, according to their own statements, a counter-image to the established "white shoe" law firms in New York City . Joe Flom was hired as the firm's first employee later that year, and litigator Bill Meagher, the fifth partner, whose name completes the letterhead as it stands, joined in 1959.

After slow growth, from 1950 onwards the willingness to increasingly support so-called "unfriendly", hostile takeovers - which has therefore not yet been practiced with today's aggressiveness in commercial law - gave the firm significant growth impulses. In the 1980s, Skadden also grew by opening offices in various countries outside of North America .

While previously the areas of litigation, antitrust and tax law were already covered in addition to merger and acquisition business ( M&A ), Skadden now also covers areas such as restructuring, finance, real estate, mass offenses and securities litigation.

In early 2019, in a settlement with the US Department of Justice , Skadden reached a $ 4.6 million fine for failing to register under the Foreign Agent Registration Act , as did Paul Manafort , US campaign chairman -President Donald Trump , as well as advised the Ukrainian government . Since spring 2019, Skadden has been investigated by the Southern District of New York (SNDY) for possible lobbying violations in connection with this so-called Ukraine affair .
