Scale diagram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A scale diagram is the graphic representation of scales in the form of a diagram . The diagram is usually built up from two or more axes. Depending on the scale level , a nominal scale is also referred to as the category axis, an ordinal scale and cardinal scale ( scalar ) the scale axis. The term scale diagram is mainly used when the scale character is of particular interest. Otherwise the type of representation is rather emphasized, such as B. with the scatter chart , line chart or column chart .

Scale charts in meteorology

Scale diagram of typical atmospheric forms of movement

A well-known example from meteorology is the Fortak scale diagram shown here. Characteristic forms of movement of geofluids are arranged in their spatial and temporal extent in scales. The spatial scope of the movement is plotted logarithmically along the horizontal axis ( abscissa ) and the temporal scope is plotted logarithmically along the vertical axis ( ordinate ). In this representation, the connection between the spatial and the temporal expansion is clearly recognizable. In a similar way, z. B. also show currents in the oceans in their space and time scales.

Scale diagrams for wavelets

In mathematics, the wavelet transformation is a method for representing general functions using terms of simpler functions ( wavelets ) at different positions and in different scales. Graphic representations of this scale dependency are also referred to as scale diagrams.
