Skansen Kronan (German: Schanze "Krone" ) was a fortress on Risåsberget in what is now Gothenburg 's Haga district .

Today, Skansen Kronan means the octagonal tower that has been preserved. Along with the Skansen Lejonet (German: Schanze "Löwe" ), it is one of the city's oldest military installations. Both jumps bear their name symbols, a crown and a lion, on the top of their roof.

In 1639, under Gustav II Adolf, the construction of the new defenses for Gothenburg began with the clearing of the forest on the granite hill Risåsberget. The Skansen Lejonet as well as the moat and the city walls of the city of Gothenburg, founded in 1619, were also rebuilt. The entrenchments, located about a kilometer outside the city walls, were supposed to make a siege of the fortified city difficult. Due to its strategically better location, this fortification concept replaces the nearby, demolished Älvsborg fortress .

In 1650 the Nya Elfsborg was added to the seafront as the third fortress of the defense line.

From 1687 to 1689 the fortress was enlarged according to plans by Erik Dahlberg . The tower still standing today also dates from this time. The walls of the tower are four to five meters thick and are made of natural stone.

In 1692 Skansen Kronan was connected to the Christina Regina bastion within the city fortifications by a protected passage ( caponier ).

In 1697 a wooden crown covered with copper was attached to the tower. The current crown on the roof is made of gold-plated copper. It is the largest crown that has ever adorned the roof and is the third since 1899 to replace the wooden crown that was attached in 1738.

In 1788 the fortress got new cannons , which can be seen today in the courtyard of the complex.

The facility was renovated around 1900.

Skansen Kronan was never contested. In 1806 the ski jump was demilitarized. Gothenburg has long been considered the safest city in Northern Europe.

Over time, Skansen Kronan served as a storage and residential building, from 1854 as a prison. From 1874 to 1925 it was used as an emergency shelter for the rapidly growing population. From November 23, 1904 until 2004 it was a military museum with historical weapons and uniforms.

In 1935 the hill was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne . It has been used for events by a private operator since 2004.
