history
Construction and opening
The Skansen cable car was opened on July 28, 1897 on the occasion of the Allmänna konst och industriutställningen in Stockholm . The construction came from the Swiss company Von Roll , which received the building contract and completed the railway.
Closure of the first runway
The first track, which was only 107 meters long (gradient between 25 and 34%) and had wooden passenger cars for a maximum of 16 people, ran until 1959 when it was closed to traffic due to the poor condition of the route and vehicles.
Opening of the new railway
It was not until April 18, 1973, after the entire system had been overhauled, extended to 196 m in length and equipped with two new vehicles for public transport. The work was again done by Roll .
The railway since 1973
The train runs between the Hazeliustor valley station (39.27 m above sea level) in southern Djurgården and Tingsvallen / Bollnästorget to the mountain station on the hill of the Skansen open-air museum (73.94 m), an extensive park landscape above the city. It is 196 m long, has a track width of 1000 mm and has a passing point in the middle of the track in the form of an automatic Abt switch with no moving parts. After a straight stretch after the valley station, the route runs over a curved bridge and overcomes a total difference in altitude of 34.67 m. The gradient is between 9.1 and 24.7%. The travel speed is between 0.8 and 2.5 m / s, a journey takes about 1 minute and 30 seconds.
The two two- axle vehicles with a distance between axles of 3759 mm have a completely closed car body made of steel with rounded corners with three stepped compartments and generous glazing. They hold up to 45 people.
Operation today
In contrast to the past, operations are carried out without one driver per passenger car. It is not operated fully automatically, as the train is not operated by passengers on request like an elevator . The entire route is monitored by cameras. The railway is in operation all year round, the train set takes between 15 and 20 minutes in the summer months, depending on the number of passengers.
