Skedemosse is a settlement belonging to the municipality of Borgholm on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .

location

Skedemosse is east of the road from Köpingsvik to Störlinge , south of Ramsättra and is surrounded by forests. It essentially consists of the buildings of a manor that was built in the 19th century. The settlement has significantly fewer than 50 inhabitants (as of 2005).

history

The name goes back to the Skedemosse moor , which was originally located in the vicinity and was drained in the 19th century. After extensive work to drain the moor had been carried out in 1818 and 1819, the Swedish king had the Skedemosse farm auctioned off in 1821. The student Albin Hildebrand and the accountant Niclas Hammarström were awarded the contract . A little later Hildebrand Hammerström paid off, so that the property became his property.

In 1822 the north wing of the courtyard was completed, which was initially used as a residential building. In 1825 the south wing was completed, which is now a museum. The main building, which is now used as a residential building, was built in 1844. The potato cellar north of the main building was built in 1846. It served as a warehouse for the farm's distillery .

The Hildebrand family also included the heads of the Swedish National Monument Preservation Office, Bror Emil Hildebrand and Hans Hildebrand , who therefore stayed frequently in Skedemosse.

Skedemosse gained fame when important archaeological discoveries were made in the area of the former moor in the second half of the 20th century.

The estate remained in the hands of the Hildebrand family until 1989 and has belonged to the Wåhlberg family ever since .

Economy and sights

There is an accommodation facility with an attached bathroom in Skedemosse. One building is used as a museum for the history of the Skedemosse Moor and for exhibitions. A fragment of a rune stone is placed in front of the museum . There is also an antique trade.
