Skeletal Family was a British rock band formed in Keighley in 1982 . It emerged from the punk band The Elements . The new name is borrowed from the song Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family by David Bowie . Originally the band could be classified as Gothic Rock , but these roots were partly removed in the later years.

history

The Skeletal Family was founded in December 1982 by Anne-Marie Hurst , Stan Greenwood, Roger "Trotwood" Nowell, Steve Crane and Ian Taylor. Her first single made it on John Peel's radio show, which made her first small success in the British indie charts possible. The band also played as support for the Sex Gang Children .

After a few line-up changes, thanks to the success of the single She cries alone, the first album was recorded. In 1984 it was published under the title Burning Oil . Ian Borrows, formerly The Southern Death Cult , served as co-producer. Now the Skeletal Family has had the opportunity to tour with The Sisters of Mercy . The group first became known to a wider public and their debut album promptly reached number 1 in the independent charts.

In the following year both the second album Futile Combat and one of their most famous singles: Promised Land were released . Despite the success, there were tensions within the band, which ultimately led to Anne-Marie Hurst's departure. She started the Ghost Dance project together with The Sisters of Mercy co-founder Gary Marx .

A new singer could be found in Katrina Phillips, but the collaboration was not to result in a new album. Still, the band released two singles for Chrysalis Records , Restless and Just a Minute , before breaking up for the first time in 1987.

In 2002 Anne-Marie Hurst, Stan Greenwood, Trotwood and Martin Henderson decided to revive the Skeletal Family. However, both Hurst and her short-term successor Katrina Phillips soon had to quit for personal reasons. Again the group had to find a singer. Ultimately, the choice fell on Claire Bannister. With her, the first studio album in 20 years was released in 2005: Sakura . This could be presented in the same year as part of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen . Soon after, bassist Trotwood left the band to focus on his collaboration with Paul Weller . A replacement could be found in Johnny Lorrimer. With him, the last studio album was released in 2009 under the title Songs of Love, Hope and Despair . In the same year, drummer Henderson and singer Bannister married.

Around the same time, Stan Greenwood and Anne-Marie Hurst, two of the founding members of the Skeletal Family, decided to make music together again. This created tension, especially with the newly married couple. First another member of the original line-up was won back with Trotwood, but the planned reunion concerts were not to come. The differences between old and newer members were insurmountable and so the Skeletal Family finally broke up two months after the release of their last album.

After a break, Hurst, Greenwood and Trotwood make music together again - this time in the form of Hurst's solo project, whereby the old, common songs also play an important role. Some concerts for 2010 have also been announced.
