Tea box bass
The tea box bass , also known as soap box bass or box bass, is a bass instrument that is used in skiffle bands mainly in Europe ( Great Britain and Germany ) and in Australian Bush bands and takes over the bass line .
The instrument, which is often self-made, consists of a tea box as a resonance body , which is usually cut open on one side. A stick or broomstick a good meter long is stuck into the top of the box or attached to the outside. Finally, one or more ropes are attached and tensioned at the top of the stick and in the middle of the top plate.
The stick is held at the top with one hand, the other plucks the rope or hits it with a drumstick . The pitch is influenced by moving the stick and thus tensioning or relaxing the rope.
It differs from the wash tub bass only in the type of resonance body .
